south beach...

before i get to this entry's book review, i'll do a quick update. tomorrow the warden, i mean steve, comes home from florida. he's been getting wasted for a solid week, so i hope he's ready to settle down and be a nice boyfriend. that's so weird how his family just gets wasted together. maybe it's not weird, maybe families do that together all the time, but it's weird to me. i mean, i would never get drunk in front of my folks and they don't drink at all. but his folks just think it's cool.

took a couple of tests last week, and i finally got on back. i got a 96 on my business law test and the prof is curving that so i should wind up with about a 106. i got the best grade in the class. that's pretty cool because i think college is a lot more competitive than it was when i went the first time. i have been so much more impressed when i've seen what people do for oral reports and the questions they ask in class. but i'm holding my own, gradewise. i'd like to think i'm just as smart if not smarter than these other students, but maybe i just know how to work the system better. either way, i know how to kick ass on a test. got one coming up on tuesday in physical geography if it doesn't get snowed out. otherwise it's thursday. keeping up that 100+ average on my math quizzes. and i'm waiting for my english papers and my history test back. i'll keep you posted.

now for the book review. this time around i read south beach, by aimee friedman. it was a teen chick lit novel, but i liked it. okay, so teen lit tends to have slightly less 3d characters, but they were fairly realistic young women. two childhood friends who grew apart in high school, alexa and holly, end up abandoned by their own cliques for spring break, so they decide to go to south beach together. long story short, they are good for each other, each helping the other break out of the teenage mold they have poured themselves into. they hook up with each other's exes, which makes perfect sense since each girl kind of adopts the better points of the other one. sexy, popular alexa learns to settle down and focus on more than just the moment, and athletic good girl holly lets out her inner wild child. but, alexa stays fun, holly stays sensible, and they realistically acknowledge that they will probably each go back to their own clique. loved the book, loved the fashion, but i can never wrap my mind around teenagers having sex. i know it happens all the time, but i just remember my own high school years, where we were all too scared of getting knocked up (and of our parents finding out) to open our legs. other than that, i loved it. a really fast read, even though it's 318 pages long.
